Jobs @ Hearsay
Who is Hearsay?
eBay, PayPal, Amazon, Google. The information web changed the world by democratizing access to information, products, and prices, leveling the playing field for 100 million small business owners around the world and giving rise to the Internet giants we know and love today.
Today, it's happening again with the social web. This time, it's not just about information but also people, "likes," and relationships. As in past technology eras, the Facebook era is giving rise to a new set of innovative companies. Facebook and Twitter are the social web for consumers.
Hearsay is the social web for business.
- We are small and early-stage (Series A funded), but already cash-flow positive with thousands of paying users.
- We are in stealth mode but people know we are on to something big (eg, GigaOm, Forbes, etc.)
- Joining a startup is risky enough. We prefer business models that actually make money (hopefully you do too).
Our users adore the product, but they keep asking for more. And that's why we need you!
Hiring Software Engineers
San Francisco, CA
We are looking to build out our stellar core team with engineers who share our vision of changing the world.
You should be comfortable across the stack, from front-end UX work to back-end analytics and infrastructure. Our current stack is Python/Django/JQuery/MySQL running on Ubuntu Karmic Koala, hosted with our friends at Rackspace Cloud. You'll be part-engineer, part-PM with healthy doses of testing and ops thrown in.
We focus on a blend of serious engineering with a strong dose of practicality: you should be equally comfortable reading Knuth and WTFJS.
Our Philosophy
- Rapid iteration. Learning from failure forges the path to success. We believe in customer feedback, rapid iteration, and making better mistakes tomorrow until we come to the right solution.
- The best idea wins. There is no place for politics, ego, or hierarchy at Hearsay. Everyone works hard to earn the respect of the team. We aren't afraid to have healthy debates to arrive at optimal solutions and decisions.
- We got your back. Hearsay is not a 9 to 5 desk job. Many of us are friends outside of work. We are a family, care about each other, and push one other to grow and to reach our full potential as a team.
Some of the Perks
- Competitive salary, generous stock, and comprehensive health coverage
- Free delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner every day
- Fun team events like Giants games, bike rides, Game Night, and Napa trips
- Free unlimited snacks and drinks (you can request whatever you want!)
- Working alongside some of the most intelligent, interesting, and genuinely nice people on earth.
We work hard and have fun. We sit in Leap 2 chairs around one gigantic conference table (although we may need to fork soon ), eat lunch together, talk to our customers a lot, and generally have a good time.

Meet the Founders
Ten years ago, Steve Garrity and Clara Shih met as freshmen at Stanford. They have been good friends and programming partners ever since.
After graduating with their BS/MS in computer science, Steve went to Microsoft (Live Mesh, Azure) and Clara went to Google (AdWords, Mobile) and Salesforce. In 2007, Clara created the first business app on Facebook Platform. She learned a lot about how companies were using Facebook and Twitter, and then wrote a New York Times bestselling book about it. Recognizing huge market demand, Steve and Clara quit their jobs and started Hearsay out of their apartments in July 2009.
Interesting Facts
- Steve is an Iron Man triathlete, was Head TA of the much-feared CS107 weed-out class at Stanford, and consistently wins IKEA furniture-building contests in our office.
- Clara loves baking cakes, can't seem to decide between Mac vs. PC, and was just named one of the Most Influential People in Technology by Fast Company.
They have spoken at Startup Day, Startup Lessons Learned, Web 2.0 Expo, AlwaysOn, SXSW, Social Foo, Stanford, and HBS.
